I made my ball mill to make terra sigillata and reclaim 90-95% of the clay used to make the fine particles as opposed to 40-50% ... but when I also make slips, underglazes, and any sort of even glaze that I know has heavy particles ... I will ball mill it just to make them a little more suspendable in the glaze.
When I cleaned the pugger out, chunks of black scale were in the clay; up to 1/2" diameter. The picture I uploaded is the clay I cleaned out of the pug mill before I replaced the aluminum housing. That ball of clay is the size of a tennis ball. I may have some fired pieces that alerted me to the problem.
I remember trying vinegar instead of water a long time ago--no success--didn't work, just as plain water doesn't--the joins needed slip. I use either slip, slip w/vinegar, or, for the best result, Peggy Heer's "Spooze".

I used to be an Art teacher, but really got hung up on clay even though I usually taught 2-4 classes a day depending on enrollments. Started using shows to fund summer vacations, then when the wife said no more to me working til 2 and teaching to have enough stock, I quit the shows.

I am part of a community studio, and we need to calculate the size of our pots/plates/objects to fire. Lidar imaging found in current iPhones has the technology to do this. The first week I took possession of house in 2004 (just arrived from UK where I had to sell on everything that plugged in and start a new workshop studio) I made appointments with qualified electrician to upgrade the wiring to the studio and to the main panel and place another panel in studio, and place wall plugs for kilns; and the plumber …
It has 5% custer in it. I've made it with part ball and part kaolin with decreasing amounts of the former and increasing amounts of the latter. As the kaolin goes up the effect from the vinegar etching goes down. I've also tried slip made from the claybody, lousy results with that also, it's a porcelain with no ball clay in it.
My studio consumes about 3000 lbs of clay per year. Compare that to your studio's consumption to decide if this operation can be scaled to your studio. I make these clay/plaster towers every two weeks or so. Also, although damp plaster will hold the clay in a ready state for maybe 8 hours, the clay needs to be removed sometime in that window.

For starters, pinch pots of medium size (about the size of the biggest ball you can make with both your hands, fingers stretched.) 2. When you turn the pot in your hands, pay conscious attention to the rotation of the object: the rotational speed, rhythm, pressure that your fingers apply, and consistency of clay.

Last month I watched a presentation in a glass studio of a new type of glass that comes in paper like sheets that you can cut with scissors. You then place this on your pottery and fire it. There is also an emulsion you can use to make a liquid glass from crushed glass that you can slip trail on your work.
Ball clay also has higher carbon and sulfur content, whereas kaolin has none. While carbons typically burn off, vaporizing sulfur produces a sulfide: ( bonds molecularly with other oxides) which can produce black specks in the clay if the sulfur content is high enough. Even white ball clays that most assume as "clean", are not.

I throw forms similar, but not quite that rounded/ball. Mine are more high shoulder narrow top/bottom, not much belly. I would think this form would be easier for a one starting with it to allow it to stiffen once the form is throw, then notice they use little water in the shaping stages of the form.
